This is water softener cation resin that we grind in house for casting our own heterogeneous cation membranes. We are offering the same material to people who want to cast membranes, run their own experiments, or skip the grinding step.
RESEARCH / TESTING USE ONLY. NOT CERTIFIED OR APPROVED FOR CONSUMER OR REGULATED APPLICATIONS.
What it is. The source resin is iFilters MED-CAT-025 Water Softener Cation Resin, a strong acid cation resin (sulfonated polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene) supplied in the sodium form. We buy it retail and grind it; Rowow LLC is not affiliated with or endorsed by iFilters.
How it is prepared. The beads are run through a high speed grinder. Nothing else is done to them.
What we do not specify. Please read this before ordering.
- Particle size: not measured, not sifted. Expect a spread from fine powder to coarse grains, with some intact beads.
- Exchange capacity: not stated. The bead supplier rates its product in grains of hardness per cubic foot, which is a softener bed figure, not a capacity per gram of powder. We have not titrated it.
- Moisture content: not measured.
- Lot testing: none. Each bag is ground from a retail bag of resin as bought.
- Certification: the source beads carry the supplier’s drinking water certification. That certification does not carry over to this ground powder, and it is not sold for food or drinking water use.
If your work depends on any of these numbers, measure them on your bag.
Quantity. Sold by volume: about 16 fl oz (473 mL), measured by filling a 16 oz cup, then packed in a sealed plastic bag. Ground powder settles and packs differently by hand, so the weight varies from bag to bag.
Using it in a membrane. Our open source casting method mixes the powder into a PVC cement binder and casts a film. The method, recipes and our notes are published at github.com/Rowow-LLC/Open-sourced-off-the-shelf-ion-exchange-membrane.
Handling. Avoid breathing the dust: grind, pour and mix with a dust mask and eye protection, in a ventilated area. Keep the bag sealed. Not for food, drug or drinking water use.
